White spots on the nails are very common, everyone at some point in their lives experiences them. Most often we hear that calcium deficiency is the reason these spots appear. However, that is just a myth and is not true.

If you notice white spots on your nails, don’t ignore that and make sure you visit your doctor as soon as possible. These white spots are known as leukonychia, which is an issue for many people and it is harmless. They usually appear as a result of small injuries to the base of the nail.

The white spots are caused because of the air bubbles in the nail and in some cases they can appear due to warts, fungus, psoriasis, eczema, or as a symptom of sarcoidosis. It is a disease that affects the lungs, skin and many other organs. Nail beds can get injured with a pinch or strike, frequent manicures and pedicures, use of gel or acrylic nails, etc.

Plummer’s nail is a condition that means hyperthyroidism. Although it is often seen as white spots, you can also notice horizontal lines or stripes on your nails. It can be a sign of malaria, leprosy, Hodgkin’s disease, or cardiac arrest.

Moreover, hypoalbuminemia can be indicated with 2 stripes (low albumin levels in the body). People dealing with it should be more careful because it may indicate serious health problems. It can show you are experiencing kidney disease, heart failure, liver cirrhosis, inter alia, or just an irregular diet.

Most often, it is an inflammatory response to infection or injury.
