If the thought of plucking your eyebrows brings you back to the stick thin brows of your high school days, fear not. Like everything in beauty and fashion, brow trends come and go and the brows of today are fuller and more lush than their 90’s counterparts. But that doesn’t mean they don’t need some grooming from time to time. If you’ve been dying to know how to pluck your eyebrows properly without the help of a professional, we’ve got the top tips and hacks for you!

4 Eyebrow Products to Invest In

1. Brow Pencil
A brow pencil like the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz is a great tool to have for brow plucking. When you’re sculpting your eyebrows, it’s helpful to have an outline of where you need to pluck, and you can use the pencil to create your outline. Move along the natural curve of your brow and tweeze anything above and below it.

2. Scissor Handle Tweezers
The type of tweezers you use for plucking will depend on your personal preference. Scissor handle tweezers are super easy to use and allow you to have great control while tweezing. They’re perfect for meticulous hair removal and are designed for those with weak hands or painful joints. You’ll get expert precision from any angle for gorgeous groomed brows.

3. Slant Tweezers
If you prefer the more classic style of tweezers, the Tweezerman slant tweezers are an excellent choice. The 25 degree slanted tip is the ideal angle for working against the brow bone and it has superior calibrated tension for comfort, control and precision. The tweezers close evenly and firmly to remove hair from the root, leaving you with perfectly styled brows.

4. Brow Trimmers
Only trim your brows if you absolutely need to. If you’re going to trim them, make sure the blade on the trimmers is long, because if they’re too short you’ll have to keep stopping, which is what can make brows uneven. You only need to trim extra long hairs. Keep in mind, length can be an asset since we rely on individual hairs to overlap with their neighbouring hairs, which covers gaps. Brush your brows up lightly and if any are much too long, go for the trim.

How to Shape Your Eyebrows

1. Find Your Natural Arch
You want to stick to the natural shape of your eyebrows when you shape and pluck them. To mark where your arch should fall, make a line from the outer edge of your nostril up to the highest point of your eyebrow at an angle. This is where you’re going to get the maximum amount of lift, so mark it with a brow pencil so you know where to shape.

2. The Start and End Marks
To find where your brow should start, use your pencil as a guide. Hold it up to your eyebrows, aligning the top bridge of your nose with your pencil. Mark this spot. To find where your brow should end, measure from the outside of your nostril and line the pencil up with the outer corner of your eye. Mark the spot where the tip of your tool touches the brow.

3. The Perfect Shape
Use the three points you’ve made to create your perfect brow shape. Connect the marks, then use a precise pencil or pomade to fill in the brows between these three points. The colour should taper off towards the end to replicate your natural brows.

4. Tweeze
Once your brows are drawn, you can carefully remove any hairs outside your drawn eyebrow to get your perfect shape. Hold the skin tight and remove each hair in the direction it’s growing to prevent rupturing of the follicle.

How to Pluck Your Eyebrows Properly

1. Prep Your Brows
To make the plucking process as seamless (and painless) as possible, wash your face with warm water or use a warm washcloth before you begin. You want your skin to be nice and clean and warm water helps relax the skin and hair follicle for easier removal. Wipe off and pat dry to remove any moisture before you start plucking.

2. Find Your Shape
You can find the perfect shape for your brows by using the steps above. Mark the three points (the start, arch and end of your brows) and connect the marks with a brow pencil. Anything that falls outside the lines can be plucked and tweezed.

3. The Perfect Pluck
Hold your skin taut when you’re removing your brow hairs. Grasp your tweezers near the base of the hair, pulling in the direction it grows, removing the large, dark hairs first. If you’re removing any hair from the top of the brow, be careful to only take what fine hairs are outside the shape. Once you’ve removed the larger hairs and the shape is formed, get close to the mirror to remove any fine, light hairs. Apply a soothing facial moisturizer to your brows if your skin is red or irritated.
